I love when the seasons change and we have a chance to breathe between the two extremes of hot, sweltering weather and cold, frigid temperatures. Spring and Autumn are my absolute favorite– in Spring it’s because of the birds, and in Autumn, it’s because of the trees.
Since moving 6 years ago to our house, I’ve become more attentive to the different calls of the birds– from Spring through Summer, and even in Fall and Winter. I’ve learned about so many more species that I just had no knowledge of beforehand– it’s so interesting too.
House sparrows

I love the sing songy nature of their calls.
House finches

This is the male– the red gives it away!

Such an odd name, but a beautiful bird.
Catbirds

Their call seriously sounds like a cat!
Blue jays

Beautiful feathers, annoying call.
Wrens

This is a Pacific wren, but the east coast version is pretty similar. I love their warbles.
Cardinals

Female cardinal– so pretty.
I was aware of these birdies, and with the exception of cardinals and blue jays, had no clue how to ID them. Some you have to listen to a couple of times– and see them visually so you can be sure you have ID’d them correctly– because they each have a couple of different songs. Especially cardinals and sparrows! I had no idea cardinals were responsible for a whole lot of the chirping I heard out my window.
What are your favorite bird calls that make you think of Spring or Summer?
